Chapter Eleven
I wake up in a sweltering sweat. Dammit, did the air conditioning break? I feel awful, though. My entire body is burning up and I feel a little light headed like my head is swimming.
I sit up and look over to the thermostat on the far wall, having to squint my eyes to see it. It says seventy-one. So what the hell?
I look over to Alex who is sleeping perfectly sound and not a bead of sweat on her. I start to panic as I slip out of the bed. Maybe something really is infected, but now I don’t have a bite at all!
None of this makes sense and I… I can’t be in these clothes anymore. As I stumble out of the room, I start to jerk my clothes off until I’m fully naked and in the living room.
Hot, still so hot!
“I can’t… I can’t breathe..!” I gasp out.
The house is too humid, or something! I need air! I sprint outside and fall onto the ground. Not even caring that I’m completely naked.
It still feels hot but the fresh air clears my head a little. I’m on all fours and can’t move to get up.
“Help… someone. Alex!” I try to cry out but my voice is small and weak somehow.
I feel like I’m about to faint until suddenly there’s this rippling pain over my entire body. I arch my back and cry out, louder than before and in agony. As I look down to my arms, I notice hair suddenly sprouting out of them.
No, not hair. Fur!
It grows so thick that it covers my arms entirely… and my face. My everything! I feel my body cramp up, like a really bad period cramp but a thousand times worse.
I feel sick to my stomach and lightheaded. It’s a terrifying pain that should have been enough for me to black out. Anyone would faint to avoid feeling agony like this! I can’t though. I won’t.
Even though I know I haven’t lost consciousness, everything goes blank for an unknown amount of time. I don’t feel the pain or nausea at all anymore.
I know time had to pass because now I’m racing through the forest about a mile down from my house. Small bush branches whip past me as I bound toward… nothing.
I’m just running. I have to run! I’ve never run so fast before. Though, maybe that is because I’ve never had four legs in which to do so with. I’m racing through these woods as a wolf and I can’t tell every piece of fauna is staying out of my path.
I can sense that the entire woods are afraid of me. Why shouldn’t they be? Wolves aren’t common here and I’m huge. At least, I feel huge. I suddenly stop myself and begin to sniff the air. It all feels so natural. I catch a scent of something completely foreign, yet somehow familiar.
The scent is unpleasant. It’s too sweet and it makes me feel queasy, but I have to know what it is.
